Veterinary Feed Directive - The FDA was working to bring the use of antibiotics under the control of licensed professionals. The only mechanism that existed early on for this was to make them prescription drugs. Prescription drugs are regulated in each state by their board of pharmacy. The regulations for these are based on human drugs and pharmacies. When veterinarians were going to be prescribing tons of medicated feed at a time, it no longer made sense for a human pharmacy to be involved. The FDA created the VFD in order to allow feed mills to work with antibiotics that would require a veterinarian to order them without having to comply with some of the onerous pharmacy requirements like keeping all of the medicines securely locked up.
